LOVELAND, Colo. - The Kansas City Mavericks defeated the Colorado Eagles by a 4-1 final score Wednesday at the Budweiser Events Center.
Here are three observations from the game:
Pauly's Hat Trick
Shawn Pauly earned first star of the night honors after posting his second hat trick of the game, scoring three goals on six shots to lead the Mavericks to a big win on Wednesday. Pauly's trifecta was his first since the Nov. 14 Kids Day Game against the Tulsa Oilers and allowed the Mavericks to extend their run of success to five wins in six games.
The Mavericks frustrated the Colorado Eagles start to finish, limiting the top team in the Mountain Division to just 20 shots on goal for the game and 0-for-4 on the power play. Kansas City held the Eagles to just six shots in the first period and four in the second, and Adam Carlson continued his strong run of play by turning away 19 of 20 shots faced in the game en route to being named second star of the night. The Washington Capitals prospect has stopped 85 of 91 shots over the last three games, all wins.
Kansas City continued its run of success against the league's top teams, continuing its trend of rising to the occasion when facing stiff competition. Coming off a weekend sweep over Fort Wayne, who entered as the hottest team in the league, the Mavericks stared down the Mountain's first-place team - a squad that had recorded at least one point in its last seven games. The Eagles were especially strong at home, entering tonight's game 21-4-3-1 on the year at the Budweiser Events Center. The Mavericks - now alone in fourth in the Central standings - will need to carry their strong play as they face the Mountain's second-place team, Idaho, in each of the next two games.
The Mavericks continue their road trip on Friday for the first of two games against the Idaho Steelheads in Boise.
