Stockton Heat Announce Two-Way Contracts For McMurtry, Nowick

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Kansas City Mavericks’ AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat, announced Monday evening that the team signed two forwards - Mike McMurtry and Darren Nowick - to two-way, AHL-ECHL contracts for the upcoming season.

Both players are currently in Stockton at the Heat preseason camp looking to earn spots on the AHL team’s roster.

McMurtry, 25, is set to enter his second full season of professional hockey. Since turning pro at the end of the 2015-16 season with five games with the AHL Texas Stars, McMurtry has played mostly at the AHL level with 15 points (7G+8A) in 47 games with Texas last year. He also skated in six games for the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL, tallying six points (1G+5A).

The 6-foot, 200-pound, left-handed forward played collegiate hockey at Northeastern University, posting a career-best 31 points (8G+23A), second-best mark on the team, as a senior. Serving as an alternate captain, McMurtry helped guide Northeastern to a Hockey East tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth in his final season.

Nowick, 25, is also going to play his second full season of professional hockey when the puck drops in October. He split the 2016-17 campaign between Kansas City and the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, posting season totals of 45 points (21G+24A) and 26 penalty minutes in 57 games with the Mavericks.

The 5-foot-10, 186-pound, right-handed forward played in 13 games with Bridgeport Sound last year, adding four points (3G+1A) and eight penalty minutes. In his professional debut, the Long Beach, California, native skated in 13 regular season games for the Mavericks to help clinch the Brabham Cup in 2015-16, totaling seven points (2G+5A) before adding three points (2G+1A) in 10 postseason games.

The Mavericks will begin their preseason camp next week, holding the Black-Orange intrasquad game on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. The game is free and open to the public.

Kansas City opens its season on the road at Tulsa on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:05 p.m. and will hold its home opener on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:05 p.m. against Wichita. Season tickets, mini packs and single-game tickets remain on sale.
