INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Kansas City Mavericks have added forward J.T. Barnett to camp on a tryout agreement, announced Wednesday by Mavericks President and General Manager Brent Thiessen.
Barnett, 25, played overseas last season, including four games in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, one game with CSKA Moscow and three with Khabarovsk Amur. He spent the majority of the year in Russia’s VHL with Zvezda Chekhov, where he totaled 10 points (7G+3A) in 24 games with a plus-3 rating.
Prior to going overseas, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound forward spent three seasons the the ECHL. His last ECHL season was 2015-16 with the Atlanta Gladiators, where he posted 13 points (5G+8A) and finished the year with a plus-2 rating in 35 games played.
The Scottsdale, Arizona native played 62 games for the Stockton Thunder the previous season, setting career highs of nine goals, 16 assists, 25 points and 31 penalty minutes. He spent his rookie season split between the Ontario Reign and Orlando Solar Bears.
The left-hand shot played junior hockey in the WHL, skating for the Vancouver Giants (2008-09, 09-10), Kamloops Blazers (2010-11, 11-12), Everett Silvertips (2011-12) and Kelowna Rockets (2012-13) in his five-year tenure in the league.
The Mavericks will hold their annual Black-Orange intrasquad game tonight at 6 p.m., free and open to the public. All fans are encouraged to bring new or gently-worn clothing, canned food or monetary donations for the Community Services League.
The team opens its season at Tulsa on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:05 p.m. and will hold its home opener on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:05 p.m. against Wichita. Season tickets, mini packs and single-game tickets remain on sale.
