INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Kansas City Mavericks received goalie Tyler Parsons and forward Mike McMurtry from the Stockton Heat on Friday.
Parsons, 20, is NHL.com’s top prospect within the Flames organization and was Calgary's second round pick, 54th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft. He brings an extensive list of accomplishments with him into his first professional season in 2017-18.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound goalie played junior hockey in the OHL for the London Knights, helping guide the team to an OHL Championship and CHL Memorial Cup in the 2015-16 season. He was named CHL Memorial Cup Most Outstanding Goaltender after posting a .942 Save Percentage as he guided London to the title and contributed to the Knights boasting the league’s best team Goals Against Average in the OHL on the year.
Last season, the Chesterfield Township, Michigan native won the World Juniors U-20 gold medal with Team USA at the Canada-based tournament, beating the host country 5-4 in the gold medal game. He held the OHL’s best Save Percentage with a .925 clip and was named to the OHL All-Star Team.
McMurtry, 25, comes to the Mavericks after playing in 47 games with the AHL’s Texas Stars in the 2016-17 season. He claimed season totals of 15 points (7G+8A) and 26 penalty minutes with the Stars in his first full professional season.
The 6-foot, 194-pound forward played college hockey at Northeastern University where he was an alternate captain during his senior season, posting career highs in goals (eight), assists (23), points (31) and penalty minutes (14) in his final year with the Huskies.
The Greely, Ontario native played in both preseason games for the Stockton Heat, scoring a goal on a rebound against the San Jose Barracuda.
The left-hand shot played six games with Idaho of the ECHL last season, averaging a point per game (1G+5A)
The Mavericks kick off a weekend double-header at Allen with tonight’s game at 8 p.m. and will complete their brief preseason schedule on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. against the Americans. The regular season gets underway on Friday, Oct. 13 at Tulsa at 7:05 p.m. and the team’s home opener will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:05 p.m. against Wichita.
