INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Kansas City Mavericks erased an early 1-0 deficit to take their preseason opener against Allen by a 3-1 final score on Friday at Allen Events Center Community Ice.
After trailing 1-0 after the first period despite a 15-9 shot advantage, the Mavs responded with three unanswered goals by Jared VanWormer, Rocco Carzo and Mark Cooper to earn the win. Goalie Mason McDonald pitched in with 29 saves on 30 shots faced in the contest.
The Mavericks, who finished the game with a 33-30 advantage in shots on goal, found themselves behind after 20 minutes as Eric Roy beat McDonald to give the Americans an early 1-0 edge.
Kansas City responded quickly, tying the game in the second period as VanWormer capitalized off a feed from Greg Betzold to knot the game at one goal apiece at the 13:11 mark of the second period.
The final period was all Mavericks with Carzo and Cooper capitalizing on scoring chances to help boost the team to a 3-1 win.
The Mavericks and Americans battle once again on Saturday (Oct. 7) at 5:30 p.m. in Allen. The Mavericks open their season on Friday the 13th at Tulsa and will hold their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 28 against Wichita at 7:05 p.m.
