MAVS SPLIT WEEKEND SET WITH TOLEDO AFTER SATURDAY LOSS

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Kansas City Mavericks (2-4-0-0, 4 points) were defeated 4-2 by the Toledo Walleye (3-1-0-0, 6 points) Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. Forward Greg Betzold turned in a multipoint performance with a goal and an assist. The Mavericks return to action next Friday against the rival Wichita Thunder.

Toledo netted two goals in the first period, both on the power play. The first came from Zach Phillips at the 6:46 mark of the opening period. TJ Hensick and Abbott Girduckis assisted on the goal. Mavericks forward Darian Dziurzynski collided with Toledo forward Josh Kestner while trying to get onside with 19 seconds left in the opening period. He was whistled for a five-minute interference major and given a game misconduct for the penalty. Toledo capitalized on the five minute major 12 seconds later, when a power play goal from Brandon Anselmini. Troy Loggins and Shane Berschbach assisted on the goal. The Mavericks were outshot by Toledo 18-7 in the period.

The Mavericks cut the Walleye lead in half on a goal from defenseman Justin Woods at the 6:47 mark of the second period. Rocco Carzo and Greg Betzold assisted on the goal. Abbot Girduckis extended the Toledo lead back to two with a goal at the 10:03 mark of the second period. Brenden Kotyk and Brett Boeing assisted on the goal. The Mavericks cut into the Toledo lead yet again, when Betzold streaked in towards the net and slipped the puck around Toledo goaltender Pat Nagle to make it a 3-2 game. 

Toledo closed the door on the Mavericks halfway through the third period at the 9:11 mark on a goal from defenseman Mark Auk. Hensick and Charle Edouard-D’Astous assisted on the goal.

The Mavericks continue their autumn homestand with a three-game home-home-road series against the rival Wichita Thunder. Friday and Saturday’s games will be at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena and the Mavs will travel to Wichita to face the Thunder at INTRUST Bank Arena in Downtown Wichita on Sunday.
