MAVS WIN THRILLER IN WICHITA, BEAT THUNDER 4-3 IN OT

WICHITA, Ks. – The Kansas City Mavericks secured their first road win of the 2019-20 season with a stunning 4-3 overtime victory over the rival Wichita Thunder Saturday night at INTRUST Bank Arena. Mavs defenseman Zach Osburn netted the game winner 2:35 into overtime and Mavericks forward Ryan Van Stralen netted two goals in the contest.

First Period-Wichita scored the first goal of the game, getting a tally from forward Ostap Safin. Forwards Peter Crinella and Fabrizio Ricci assisted on the goal at the 2:17 mark of the opening frame.-The Mavericks outshot the Thunder 23-10 in the first period.

Second Period-Ryan Van Stralen tied the game 1:12 into the second period on a breakaway goal. Forward C.J. Eick assisted on the goal.-Wichita goaltender Mitch Gillam was injured on the Van Stralen goal and was replaced by Evan Weninger.-Van Stralen collected his second goal of the game 36 seconds later and gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead on another breakaway goal. Mavs forward David Dziurzynski assisted on the goal.-Wichita tied the game on a goal from forward Spencer Dorowicz at the 8:59 mark of the second. Ostap Safin assisted on the goal.-The Mavericks regained the lead on another breakaway goal, this time from forward Tad Kozun at the 15:04 mark of the second period. Darian Dziurzynski picked up an assist on the goal.-The Mavericks outshot the Thunder 14-12 in the period.

Third Period/Overtime-Wichita tied the game with 1:07 to go in regulation on a goal from Beau Starrett. The goal was unassisted.-The Mavericks outshot the Thunder 10-9 in the period.-Mavericks defenseman Zach Osburn netted the game-winning goal at the 2:35 mark of overtime. David Dziurzynski and Ryan Galt assisted on the goal. 

Notes & Streaks-The Mavericks 23 first period shots were their highest shot total in a single period this season.-Ryan Van Stralen recorded his third multipoint game of the season and his first since getting a goal and an assist on November 16 against Rapid City. -The Mavericks outshot the Thunder in all three periods.-The win was the Mavericks first road win of the season.

The Mavericks and Thunder will resume play of November 29th’s game that was suspended on Friday evening due to unplayable ice conditions at 4:05 p.m. at INTRUST Bank Arena Sunday afternoon. The Mavs return home to Silverstein Eye Centers Arena for a Friday night contest against the Thunder on December 6. Kansas City then welcomes the Fort Wayne Komets on December 7 for Marvel Super Hero Night and annual Teddy Bear Toss. For ticket info, visit ticketmaster.com.
